General Responsibilities:

The Associate Director, Science Media Relations plays an integral role in daily media relations support, working with two other individuals, in order to pitch, position and place positive media coverage, as well as respond to media requests, for beef. This position is responsible for building relationships with leading scientific media outlets and reporters who frequently cover studies of the day, scientific journal news and key research topics such as stewardship (beef production and antibiotic use), sustainability, and nutrition.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for proactive and reactive media relations support, including proactively developing pitches, press releases and storylines as well as reactively responding to media calls for consumer, business and scientific thought-leader publications.
  • Proactively reviews and builds relationships with target publications by fostering consistent dialogue and building trust with key publications, including but not limited to outlets such as National Public Radio, Health News Daily, The Scientific American and more.
  • Develops and implements strategy to build strong relationships with public relations and communications staff at major universities, especially those conducting beef research and works with them to determine media relations outreach opportunities when studies are released to position beef in the most impactful way. Incorporate industry best practices with guidance.
  • Develops responses to inaccurate or incorrect media stories by providing accurate information and resources to target publications. This may be an email, letter-to-the-editor or phone call to help correct misinformation.
  • Develops and executes effective and timely communications plans: tactics may include news articles, digital/web content, outreach strategies, presentations, video scripts, collateral, and talking points to ensure the Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner. brand and messaging are pulled through.
  • Participates in daily newsroom calls to determine media storylines, trends and opportunities for beef.
  • Collaborates with other members on the team to optimize efficiency and ensure consistent messaging across channels.
  • Contributes to the development of creative communications strategies and practices by keeping abreast of latest industry standards, best practices, tools and technologies.
QUALIFICATIONS

  • Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, English, and/or related field.
  • At least three years of experience in journalism, public relations, communications, content development and/or media relations; agency experience is a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills, including both written and oral, are essential, as is the proven ability to write clearly, concisely, quickly and accurately.
  • Candidates must be detail-oriented, flexible, self-directed and a team player.
  • He/she must be able to work under pressure and in a timely matter and be willing to work during non-business hours to accommodate media requests and opportunities.
  • Willingness to be a strong advocate for beef, with an open mind and positive attitude is a must.
  • He/she must have a commitment to upholding beef’s position as the preferred protein and have a passion for working for America’s farmers and ranchers.
  • Overnight travel is required for this position, travel will vary from 10% to 15%. May require travel and/or work on weekends.
