JOB DESCRIPTION

The Media Sales Coordinator position is responsible for helping to identify, mentor, and oversee students in the Department of Communication who are interested in media sales careers. In addition, the position is expected to generate underwriting revenue for WICR Radio and advertising sales for The Reflector student newspaper, UIndy TV, and, as needed, other departmental entities.  The position is also involved in WICR’s event marketing promotions, fundraising campaigns, and community relationship building.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide practical education and mentorship for students in media sales and promotion including, but not limited to, prospecting, conducting client needs assessments (CNA), making sales calls, writing copy, and developing and maintaining client relationships
  • Identify prospective underwriting and advertising clients for WICR Radio, UIndy TV, The Reflector, and other entities as applicable
  • Help WICR build and maintain relationships in the Central Indiana Arts and Cultural community for the purposes of station revenue and promotion
  • Set spot rates and manage inventory to determine effective ways to package underwriting and advertising opportunities for clients
  • Develop and submit traffic and production orders; work with the radio traffic department and advisers for other student media entities to bill clients, provide proof of performance affidavits and collect payments due
  • Participate in annual revenue forecasting, budgeting, and goal setting; track progress; and regularly produce revenue reports
  • Lead federal regulatory (FCC) compliance efforts regarding allowable content for over-the-air public radio underwriting announcements
  • Provide select components of WICR Radio's Public Inspection File (PIF)
  • Assist with WICR's community event marketing efforts, on-air listener pledge drives, and sustained donation program
QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Communication, Telecommunications, Media, Marketing, Advertising, or a related field is required.
  • Media sales certifications (RAB, P1, LBS, etc.) a plus
  • Five years of professional experience in media sales (including traditional and digital platforms), public media development, or a related field
  • Knowledge of selling underwriting for non-commercial broadcasting preferred
  • Sales training or teaching experience is a plus
  • Desire to mentor and develop students for professional careers in media sales
  • Ability to analyze facts and exercise sound judgment in arriving at conclusions; ability to make decisions while managing multiple priorities
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment; strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
  • Attention to detail and can work with databases, spreadsheets, etc
