Feature Friday: Position Elements - Job Application Building Blocks

Posted by Patrick Clark October 4, 2013

All jobs within a company are not the same.  Different requirements. Various qualifications. Diverse skill sets. So why do companies ask applicants for the exact same inputs regardless of the job opening it is trying to fill?

This one-size-fits-all approach has bugged us since the beginning of time (and by “beginning of time”, I really mean since Hyrell’s creation). So we did our best to fix it using Position Elements within The Hyrell System.

In broad terms, a Position Element is any grouping of information that an applicant can see or complete. You can think of them as the building blocks of a given job application.  And much like building blocks, you can structure them as needed on a template-by-template basis.

Now you can ask your Senior Accountant applicants for inputs specific to the skills they need to have and those inputs will be different than the Customer Service Representative position you are also looking to fill.

This removes the burden from you, the hiring company, to screen through varying types of information received - resumes, cover letters, faxes, emails, etc. - to figure out “does this applicant have what I am looking for?”

Using Position Elements, the job-specific information that you want is already provided by each applicant. It is logical, contextual and relevant to the job opening.

Examples of Position Elements include:

Also, by architecting the system using the Position Elements approach, it enables us to offer new, cutting-edge, recruiting and hiring techniques as they become available.  When new ideas or product enhancements come up, we aren’t re-engineering everything from scratch. Rather, we can create a new Position Element and you can use it as needed.

There isn't a cookie-cutter approach to recruiting and hiring.  And there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to job applications.  But fear not - Position Elements are the building blocks you need for a better recruiting and hiring process.
